What made you decide to start a food blog?

I started my blog in the summer of 2011. I was on summer break from college and was going to host a bake sale. It ended up falling through but I had a bunch of cute baking supplies and nothing to make it for. I decided on a whim that I would start a baking blog.

Back then, blogging was just starting to become mainstream. It was certainly not a trendy thing like it is now. I didn’t actually tell very many people about, to be honest. To me it was just a hobby and creative outlet. As Instagram hit big and blogging progress my blog continued to grow with it. It has been so fascinating to see what works and what doesn’t. I have learned so much a long the way and my baking and sweet tooth have certainly progressed.

Do you actually eat all of the food on your blog?

This is probably the question I get asked the most. Yes, I honestly do! Because I want to be one hundred percent honest with you, I wouldn’t be able to put out a recipe that I didn’t eat myself. The only way to really perfect recipes is by trying them.

Obviously, many of my recipes make a lot of food. Because I try to moderate the amount of sugar I eat, I do my best to give away extras. It helps with feedback and who doesn’t want free sweets?!

How do you come up with all of your recipes?

I look for inspiration everywhere. I am always trying to come up with new creative spins when creating my recipes. Watching shows like Unique Sweets always seem to spark my creativity. I honestly try to avoid recipe sites and platforms like Pinterest, because I aim to keep my work different from other bloggers. Although, sometimes we do end up using similar ingredients, etc. based on trends. Overall, I want to create a unique baking experience for all of my readers. I want them to find a new way to embrace their creativity and to develop a love for baking.

How did you learn to photograph your food? And what do you use to take your pictures?

If you look back at some of my early posts you might be able to see that food photography did not come naturally to me. (Cringe!) Luckily I have learned to advance my photography skills by taking classes, and researching tricks and tips. Color is your best friend in food photography. Any way you can add color to. Your food and props the better. Since most food is brown and beige in color, it is up to a baker to bring it to life. (Yay for food coloring and sprinkles!)

When I first started my blog, I used an iPhone. For a while, I used a Canon a Rebel 7D. Now, I use a Canon Rebel 70D and basically switch off between two lenses. It really is an amazing camera and I highly recommend that you get one of you’re considering photographing food.

Where do you get all of your props?

I wish they had a store that carried all food styling props! Because that doesn’t exist, I am always on the hunt for fun and colorful (specifically pink) cooking supplies and styling props. Some of my favorite places to check are: Homegoods, Sur La Table, Crate and Barrel, Target, Tuesday Morning, Pier One Imports, William Sonoma, Hobby Lobby, cake supply shops, Michaels, Paper Source, and Joann’s.

Is it possible to make money food blogging?

Yes, it is definitely possible. The biggest way to make money in the blogging world is through sponsorships. It is a bit different for food bloggers as compared to fashion bloggers (price points, etc.), but there are some food bloggers who do it full time. And they have been quite successful.

I personally do not do any sponsored posts, because I want to be completely honest and straightforward with you all. I always try to do things with my readers in mind.

Looking back, would you have done anything differently?

If there was one I could change, it would be the amount of times I changed my web host. I wish I would have just started with WordPress. I changed around for various reasons, not knowing that WordPress would be the best fit for my blog. My followers had to adjust to the new interfaces/addresses, which caused me to lose some along the way. My advice is to do it right from the beginning!
